“Don’t hate yourself because you’re not perfect. You have a lot of company.” – Maxwell Maltz, M.D. – Psycho-Cybernetics, Updated and Expanded
When people tell me about the battles they are fighting, sometimes they feel as if they are all alone, that they are the only ones with this issue.
This is why I often say, “It’s a big club, and you’re not the only one in it.”
No one is perfect, and no one will ever be perfect. Assuming that some people are without flaws, you will idolize and idealize them, thinking you should be the same way. Or you’ll feel frustrated at your inability to be what you picture another person to be.
When you drop the false thinking on this subject and simultaneously accept your imperfections while working to improve upon them, you will be far better off.
From time to time, we witness athletes who have an undefeated season. Then there are those incredible rarities who go unbeaten throughout their entire career.
Rocky Marciano was 49–0 when he retired from professional boxing. But Marciano’s perfect record was not a reflection of perfect, mistake-free boxing.
If you’ve ever watched his championship fights, you’ll see he wasn’t always winning when he landed a knockout blow. One time, an open wound was bleeding so badly that he had to end the fight quickly or risk the fight being stopped.
Most people will never have an undefeated record in anything, but all of us can start a winning streak. We can chart a course where we engage in a winning battle over ourselves every day, no matter what is going on in the world.
We can make a choice to begin doing something we are interested in for a minimum of thirty days, or longer.
A daily winning streak is a variable we can control. There’s no one else competing with us but ourselves, and each day we mark off on the calendar communicates to our big self that we are a winner who is victorious over his or her mental battles on a daily basis.
