Yesterday I did something strange… or so it would appear without the full story.
A few minutes before I sent out emails and put up social media posts about the launch of my new book, Psycho-Cybernetics 365, I purchased a copy from Amazon.
Now, you might wonder why I did such a thing, after all, I have a few copies sitting around the house that were sent to me from the publisher.
The reasons I did so are as follows:
1. I prefer to lead by example. This means not asking anyone to do something that I’m unwilling to do myself. As you know, there are a lot of coaches, teachers and parents who give advice yet don’t follow it themselves. I’d rather not be the “do as I say not as I do” type.
2. I wanted to know how it feels to receive my own book in the mail, from someone selling it for me.
Well, after placing my order, I felt mighty pleased with my investment, and that’s a good thing, isn’t it?
As the orders rolled in, it was delightful to see all the people posting on my Facebook page, letting me know they just ordered, or that they received the book already. Many thanks to all of you.
Then something unanticipated happened last night. I got an email around midnight from a young man who is a mere 93 years of age. He wrote the following note:
Matt,
I just discovered Psycho-Cybernetics 365, and this evening I read up to Jan. 16. This is simply genius writing. I am so pleased to see what you have done so far with reinterpreting Maltz’s writings, then including the refreshments of your own mind. Congratulations.

I was so puzzled by Larry’s words that I couldn’t help but pick up one of those copies I still have on my desk. Instead of waiting for the Amazon truck, I began reading what I wrote as though I am a customer in search of this “genius writing” Larry mentioned.
It’s a mystical sort of experience when you begin reading a book you wrote and edited (with help from the fabulous Deborah Herman – deborahherman.com), and that you narrated. It’s even more intriguing when the words captivate you so much that you are up until almost 2 A.M., reading what was assembled.
By and by, didn’t take long for me to read a passage and think to myself, “Who wrote this?”
Yes, the “eye that is me” wrote this, but I will be the first to say that the real genius behind it all was the Creator working with me, giving me guidance along the way.
This is why I say you can get a lot more accomplished, including things you cannot fathom, when you remove the focus from yourself and put it on the goal, the mental picture, the invention, the task or action step at hand.
After doing this, don’t be surprised if you look back at what you created and find yourself uttering, “Who did this?”
