Q: Dear Matt,
I love your stuff. Been following you for over 20 years starting with Combat Conditioning. I have a question for you that I hope you can help me with. When I get home at night I have things I want to do and I know I need to get out of my comfort zone, but I can’t. This is so frustrating and it’s driving me nuts. What do you recommend?

A: Dear Anya,
Such an amazing question that I’m comfortable answering. You see, you don’t need to “get out of your comfort zone” because you’re not in it to begin with. By your own words you are frustrated and “nuts.” This means you’re in your “uncomfort zone.”
Herein lies one of the biggest lies in self-development. It’s not about getting out of comfort, it’s about getting into the highly prized and desired “Zone,” which just so happens to be the same as “the Comfort Zone.”
Ask any athlete, fighter, writer, pianist, painter, surgeon or general, if he or she performs better when relaxed and comfortable or when tense and terrified.
Personally, when I analyze all my greatest accomplishments, I wasn’t at AutoZone getting my oughtos fixed. I wasn’t keeping up with the Joneses. I was keeping up with my Zoneses. My highly regarded and beloved Zoneses. Tis why I say successful living is not getting out of your comfort zone; it’s finding it.
