In Zero Resistance Living, the advanced course on Psycho-Cybernetics, Dr. Maltz gave four cardinal rules for psychological and spiritual relaxation. One of them was as follows:
“Keep up with yourself; not the Joneses.”
In the same course, Dr. Maltz stated:
“Now, take your sunglasses off and tell yourself, ‘I refuse to destroy myself with pretense. I won’t keep up with the Joneses; I refuse to be what I’m not. I’ll be myself and rise to the potential within me.'”
These passages are yet another way to explain the folly of thinking big – for no good reason, other than you feel inadequate and want to “measure up.”
Whether my neighbor is driving a Tesla or a Lamborghini, I don’t feel the need to have one. If all my neighbors have an electric golf cart to drive around the area, I still don’t care enough to get one.
Focus on the goal you want to accomplish, independent of what others have. Give no thought to keeping up with the Joneses, the Smiths – and/or the Kardashians.
