“Everyone has, at some time or another, been successful in the past.” – Maxwell Maltz, M.D. – Psycho-Cybernetics, Updated and Expanded
Believe it or not, there are people who will tell you that their whole life has been a failure, that they haven’t succeeded in anything. Such a statement is not only false but it is also an impossibility.
The fact that you are speaking a language is proof that you’ve succeeded in something. And if we want to dive
deeper, those who talk (or write) this way are successfully drumming up a negative narrative about themselves.
There’s no sense in arguing with those who talk this way. A far better approach is to ask questions that make them see how many loopholes there are in their statements.
Here are some questions I might ask:
How many years of formal schooling did you have? Did you pass any classes?
How many languages can you speak, read or write?
Can you walk? Can you ride a bicycle? Can you drive a car?
Can you eat a meal without someone feeding you?
Can you bathe yourself? Can you brush your teeth? Can you get dressed without help?
Can you comprehend a question being asked and give an answer?
Can you listen to a joke, hear the punchline, and laugh?
Can you see life itself and the characters in it as a clown show?
Almost anyone can answer “yes” to these questions, and this serves as sufficient proof that all of us have many success experiences that we overlooked or ignored.
Accurate questions jog the memory. They help people realize how they have hypnotized themselves to picture an idea that is not true. Accurate questions begin to dehypnotize you and rid your mind of erroneous mental pictures, false narratives and distorted stories.
Once these false mental pictures are removed or cast to the side, you can move on to the fun side of living.
