“A golfer needs to know where the bunkers and sandtraps are — but he doesn’t think continuously about the bunker, where he doesn’t want to go. His mind ‘glances’ at the bunker, but dwells upon the green.” – Maxwell Maltz, M.D. – Psycho-Cybernetics, Updated and Expanded
Today’s quotation from Dr. Maltz is an example of what I call the necessity of knowing your GPS position in relation to your goal.
You maintain simultaneous awareness of where you are and where you want to be.
Golfers must know where they don’t want the ball to go while picturing where they want it to land.
The pros don’t dwell on where they are in a disempowering way. They use a minimized mental picture of where they are on the course. The same is true in team sports, such as football, where a receiver must focus on catching the pass while maintaining awareness of his feet landing in bounds.
When it comes to goal setting, so many people are led to believe that all you need to do is focus on your target and that you should ignore where you are currently.
This is not how you get results each day when you want something to eat or drink.
You acknowledge your hunger and thirst, picture the food and beverage you want, and go get them.
Why change the game and use another method when moving toward goals in other areas of your life?
The hunger and thirst method works flawlessly every day of your life, while alternative methods rarely work.
See where you want to go but pay attention to where you are now.
If you want to increase your income and financial well-being, create graphs and charts that tell your brain, “Here is where I am now and this is where I am going.”
To achieve your goals, metaphorically speaking, you pull the bowstring back and remove the slack so the arrow can fly. You create tension in the direction of the goal, then you release it. If you don’t pull the bowstring back, the arrow doesn’t move.

I honestly believe that your book is destined to be ranked right up there with Dr. Maltz’s original book. It is THAT GOOD! I am so glad I am reading it. Take care, Sir.”
