Q: Dear Matt,
When I get up each day I can’t shake the feeling of being a loser. I’ve had a lot of wins in life, but the losses are pulling me down and I can’t get them out of my mind. Am I doomed? Any suggestions?
Wanda Wynn
A: Dear Wanda,
There’s an old saying I learned from Grandmaster Fu El: “Don’t trust your feelings. They are wrong more often than you can count.”
Sure, there are times when you do want to trust your feelings, especially those deeper gut feelings. Some of those feelings are “nature calling.” But the feelings you have early in the morning about being a loser, they’re not trustworthy. They are fool’s gold. They are the great deceivers.
Here’s a psycho-physical exercise you can do to clear the air. Firmly lock your hands together behind your neck. Now “try” to pull your hands apart. Fight your “self” with each hand.
In the end, you’ll find this exercise to be a losing battle, no matter how long you try. And because neither hand can win, you cannot win.
So why do this exercise?
Because it brings you face to face with the fact that you cannot always win. And because you cannot win all the time in everything you do, why beat yourself?
A much better idea is to join forces, as you did while locking hands in this exercise.
But don’t stop with your hands. Join forces with the Creator, too. In so doing the two of you will form an unstoppable duo.
