Fearless Goals
Dear Matt,
I keep hearing and reading that you need to set goals that scare you. But whenever I set a goal that scares me I don’t take action. What is your take on this?
Jeremiah
Dear Jeremiah,
Let’s go back to when you were an infant. Did your parents scare you into learning how to walk?
No matter how much your parents screwed up, and all parents do to some degree, I have yet to see parents who scared their children to get them walking. And yet, this “set scary goals” advice is rampant in self-development.
Every once in a while, a goal that scares you is worthwhile, but only for those people who are already at an above average level of accomplishment already.
Most of the time, though, even with those who are accomplished, a scary goal leads to inaction and stagnation.
When you were a baby you learned to stand, walk, run, speak and so on… FEARLESSLY.
You began with simple steps.
No matter your age today, you cannot go wrong following in the baby’s footsteps.
Start with the simplest steps and let those steps evolve naturally. Instead of taking the path of most resistance, take the baby’s path – the path of Zero Resistance.
