Dear Matt,
Here’s a strange question that I’m hoping you can address. When I set a goal and focus on it, it seems that something always comes up and gets in my way to prevent it from happening. For example, I wanted to increase my income so I could take a vacation in Hawaii, then my car broke down and the repairs were expensive. After that my air conditioning unit suddenly needed to be replaced. I don’t understand. Can you offer some useful advice?

Dear Donte,
Ah, the obstacles that can arise as soon as we set a goal. It can and does happen. Some people think it’s a cosmic test but I look at it as more of a cosmic jest. God is laughing to see if you can figure out the pieces to the puzzle that weren’t included in the box.
As a reader of Psycho-Cybernetics, you are well acquainted with the idea that a torpedo or missile zigs and zags on the way to the target. So does a football player who is running down the field to score a touchdown and doesn’t want to get tackled. But what if you were to reverse the zig and the zag in your thinking? Instead of trying to plow through obstacles that get in your way, or trying to zig-zag around them, why not have the goal zig and zag toward you?
Life is a moving target. Yes, you can zig-zag your way to the target – but there are times when all your efforts are in vain and don’t strike a vein, so you’re better off having the target zig-zag its way to you. Think of it as making an in-bound call. You can call someone who doesn’t pick up. Or you can be thinking or even daydreaming about someone and for some mysterious reason, that someone picks up the phone and calls you. When a hunter chases a deer, the deer runs away. But if the hunter stops chasing, the deer will come closer. Life is a moving target. Don’t chase it away. Get it to move toward you.
