Dear Matt,
I am motivated to take action but after a few weeks I find myself slipping. I want to be more consistent. So, can I ask you how you keep yourself motivated?
Anne Wei
Dear Anne,
Today I will give you a way to keep yourself motivated which has nothing to do with motivating yourself before you take action.
You begin by moving your hands, but instead of waiting to be motivated to move your hands, you move them until you are motivated, which usually takes a few minutes.
You reverse your thinking about motivation being something that happens before you move and recognize that movement causes you to feel motivated.
Real life experience will show you that once you are moving it is harder than you think to stop yourself.
Last week, for example, I noted that some of the bamboo trees in our yard needed pruning. So I grabbed a small saw and walked up to the first one. I then gave myself a small goal, which was to cut off a few branches. This is something that only takes a minute, and yet, an hour later I was still on the job. I had no intention of pruning for an hour, but once I started, I couldn’t stop.
Keep this in mind. Get your hands moving and they will tell you to keep moving.
