Nearly three years ago, at 6 a.m., I looked out the window of my 21st story condo on China's Hainan Island. And I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It wasn't a beached whale or a typhoon blowing the palm trees to ribbons either.
It was nothing more than an old man walking backwards.
I mean real, real slow.
Big deal, you may think. Perhaps a "so what?" Or a "What's that got to do with me?"
Well, when I first witnessed this my reaction wasn't all that different. At first I thought I was looking at the stupidest thing I had ever witnessed in the history of physical exercise. But then I thought to myself, "Fure-cat, maybe he knows something you don't. Why not go try it for yourself before you cast judgment."
Reluctantly, I took the elevator down to the court yard where the man was shuffling . I observed him closely and without letting him know, imitated him as best I could.
As I moved I sensed something very, very different happening inside my brain and body - but I couldn't put my finger on it. All I knew is that I felt a sense of inner peace and serenity that went beyond the norm.

No Classes for This Type of Training
I truly wanted to learn more about this type of training - but there were no classes in it and no one was coughing up any "how to" on it. Including the old man I saw who sparked my interest in the first place. When I asked him questions he flat out ignored me.
Not to be discouraged, over the next couple years I played around with a lot of backward training ideas, searching far and wide for whatever I could find on the subject. I read how running backward trained the body and the mind differently, how it improved cardiovascular functioning and so on.
I read about how some old time boxers, Gene Tunney, to name just one, used backward training to get into incredible shape - wherein he put a whooping on the great Jack Dempsey. I read about groups of men and women who run marathons backwards. Think of that!
Naturally, when I read this it fired me up about this type of training - even though at the same time I knew running 6-12 miles backwards per day was NOT something the average over 40 American could or would do.
Even so, maybe I could train a bit like Tunney - so I opted for sprinting backwards as well as running distance backwards.
Believe it or not, I even taught myself how to swim backwards. Imagine doing the "butterfly" in reverse. Well, I can. Same goes for "freestyle."
And although I enjoyed this type of backward training exercise immensely - I knew something was still missing from what I was doing. There was MORE to this type of training than simply moving backwards. Much, much more.
What little had been written about training backward focused on "speed and endurance" - as well as the cardiovascular and muscular benefits. Everything was written from a western point of view, wherein there was no focus on spiritual development or the so-called anti-aging effect.
From the western point of view everything was about speed. But in China, from what I could observe and from what I practiced, the objectives were more about balance, harmony, tranquility, peace of mind along with the development of "life force" or chi.
At this point I gave my brain the command to find "the answers" - either intuitively or via guidance from a teacher who KNEW.
The 75-Year Old Man Who ALWAYS Happy!
I had no idea how much my life was about to change when I peered out a hotel window in Ningxia, China, two summers ago. Several floors below I saw another "old man" walking backwards. Yet, he seemed to be light years ahead of the "old man" I saw on Hainan Island. He wasn't just walking backwards - he was floating. Most importantly, he had a aura of energy surrounding him that beckoned me to come closer.
I sprinted down the hallway, pressed the elevator button and prayed the man wouldn't be gone by the time I made it to his station.
When I blasted through the doors I saw he was still there. I breathed a sigh of relief as I approached. And then I did a very un-Chinese thing. I walked right up to the man, as if compelled to do so by an outside force, and interrupted his training. In Chinese I asked him if he could tell me what he was doing and how.
To my astonishment he stopped walking backwards - looked at me with a soul-stirring smile and began to explain the details of what he was doing. My brother-in-law was there to help with the translation, whenever needed, and I made sure to remember every detail being shared.
The man, Master Hu, was 75 years young. I would have guessed him to be about 50. He moved with the grace and ease of a cat - and one thing I quickly noted about him that we rarely see in this world ...
